Every year the ICAA hosts the winter intensive at their National Office.  The intensive was an opportunity to become lost in another world, studying Palladio’s books, learning the Vitruvian orders, sketching Doric columns, and wash rendering capitals. I was so inspired I would sketch in the freezing weather during my lunch break and explore the New York Public Library during the afternoon break.  I went into the week with an interest in classical architecture and I left with a true passion.

During the Winter Intensive, I studied the classical orders, then at the end of the week, translated what I learned into a pavilion.  The doric order structure is located in Prospect Park and envisioned as a place people could sit to rest and enjoy the view.

While at the intensive, wash rendering was taught and practiced as well.  The column wash rendering (above) shows how light creates shadows on a column.
